The story told is that upon returning to Montreal, Canada, following his exploration of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River 1673-1674, with Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette, Louis Joliet, at the request of French officials, drew from memory the “Nouvelle decouverte de plusieurs nations dans la Nouvelle France en l’année 1673 et 1674”, translated “New Discovery of Several Nations in New France in the Years 1673 and 1674.” Joliet lost all of his records of his exploration when his boat capsized in the St. Lawrence River. Louis Joliet was a Canadian explorer, who, despite his philosophical and religious studies, renounced his clerical vocation in 1667 and pursued fur trading at the age of 23 instead. Did you know that Joliet’s exploration in search of the Northwest Passage was not sanctioned by the French Crown? It was Jean Baptiste Talon, Louis XIV’s intendant, who sent him and his company west, where he failed to find the elusive passage, but claimed the Louisiana Territory for the French. He became the first prominent French Canadian explorer to play a vital role in the opening-up of North America for trade.

The original version of Joliet’s map was first published in the Jesuit Relations in 1674, and five contemporary copies were made. The map was the earliest to depict Mississippi based on first hand knowledge, and is one of the oldest maps of Canada made by a Canadian. The map depicts North America wholly surrounded by water, while the Great Lakes- Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario are presented as vast bodies of water in the interior. Did you know that Lake Michigan was called Lac des Illinois (Lake Illinois)? The lake became known as Lac des Illinois in 1679, a name derived from the Illinois Native American tribe that lived on its shore. The Great Lakes appear to be fed by two river systems, one being the Saint Laurent River, emptying into the Atlantic, and the Mississippi River(Riviere de Buade) that empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

This map indicates areas along the Mississippi River inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Papikaha, Matora, Tanika, and other groups labeled as sauvages, such as the Tahensa and Apistonga. At the bottom of the map, the word Europeans is labeled, alongside drawings of crucifix, not only indicative of the presence of other foreign powers in North America such as the Spanish, but of their missionary undertakings as well. Places like Nouvelle, Quebec, Labrador and Florida are also clearly labeled.

This map was presented as a dedication to Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac et de Palluau, Governor General of New France. It served a purpose of establishing a trade route that playing an important part commercially and militarily for New France.

For the last 15 years, artist Lisa Middleton has resided in Kalispell where she started a unique map art business, inspired by historic Montana maps. Middleton first came to Montana from Wisconsin at the age of 19 as a Glacier National Park worker and made it her permanent home in 2008.

“The scenery brought me here and the people are why I stayed,” Middleton said.

She settled in and made countless memories over the years hiking the Swan, Glacier Park and Jewel Basin with her friends.

Now that she has decided to leave the Flathead Valley, Middleton would like to have the opportunity to say farewell to local friends and supporters. Nancy O’s Interiors, located at 7935 Montana 35 in Bigfork, will be hosting a reception Aug. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. where Middleton will be displaying and selling some of her personal favorite framed maps and prints. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be offered.

“Flathead Valley shop owners have always been so supportive,” Middleton said. “They were number one in line to try out my map prints.”

This year you can find her products and designs at Electric Avenue Gifts in Bigfork, Western Outdoor and Hallmark in Kalispell, Huckleberry Patch in Hungry Horse, and the Glacier Park Inc. shops in Glacier National Park.

Eventually her art transcended the region to include other states and regions throughout the United States. She started painting maps full time in 2014, traveling seasonally to shows.

“Compared to other states, Montana maps hold some of the most historically satisfying details of any maps I’ve researched and painted,” Middleton said.

Today Middleton’s design company, Great River Arts, not only celebrates historic maps, but also designs maps of today’s most treasured places. Her additional collections of maps include modern-day cartography with bright colors, ornate illustrations and elaborate borders. Expanding her collection to the Great Lakes Region, Eastern seaboard, the southeast and Florida,

Middleton’s work has been showcased at major art shows across the country, as well as locally. Her art has adorned book covers, been props in films, and is printed on blankets, paper and wood signs by Meissenburg Designs in Bigfork.

Finished version of the Hiking Trails of Yellowstone Park

Largely situated in Wyoming and extending into Idaho and Montana, the Yellowstone National Park is a natural, scientific, and scenic unspoiled beauty. In 1872, it became the first national park in the United States covering an area of more than 3, 400 square miles. Yellowstone National Park was home to many Native American tribes, including the most recent groups- Crows, Shoshones, Bannocks, and Blackfeet. Now, it is a pilgrimage site for visitors who want to experience its unique and natural beauty-its geysers, mud pots, hot springs, mountains, lakes, rivers, canyons, wildlife, and much more.

Yellowstone has one of the largest high-elevation lakes-Yellowstone Lake, as well as North America’s largest super volcano- Yellowstone Caldera. Yellowstone’s wildlife is abundant and diverse. Dozens of species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish, as well as endangered or threatened wildlife inhabit Yellowstone. Grizzly bears, wolves, bison, elks, bighorn sheep, moose, deer, Canadian lynx, and wolverines are some of the more than sixty mammals that live in Yellowstone.

Hundreds of species of trees and plants can be found in the park. The forested areas of the park is covered by lodgepole pine, and other conifers such as subalpine fir, Engelmann spruce, Douglas-fir and Whitebark pine can be found in groves all through the park as well. Deciduous trees such aspen, cottonwood, and willow, along with flowering plants including sand verbena, shooting star, kitten tails, and Jove’s buttercup, among others can be found in the park.

The park has a vast network of trails that extends more than 200 miles, and leads to hundreds of secluded places where Yellowstone’s wildlife and majestic scenery can be thoroughly enjoyed and experienced. Some trails are associated with various park attractions such as such as the geysers and hot springs, while others are in the Yellowstone backcountry. One of the best hiking trails is Mt. Washburn Trail which offers a combination of scenery, wildflowers and wildlife, and views of the Grand Canyon, a portion of Yellowstone Lake, the Tetons and even an eruption of Old Faithful is possible. The Pelican Valley has an abundant wildlife especially grizzly bears, bison, coyotes and birds, and mountaintop views of Yellowstone and backcountry lakes; a system of trails-Elephant Back Mountain Trail, Pelican Creek Nature Trail, Storm Point Trail, Turbid Lake Trail, among others makes Pelican Valley accessible.

Yellowstone National Park’s hiking trails are numerous; other areas that are great for hiking are Mammoth, Norris, Lake, Old Faithful, Tower, Roosevelt, and West Thumb. Each offers a different view, making hiking the very best way to experience the treasure that is the Yellowstone National Park.

Here’s one to throw around during your next cocktail party. The year was 1929, and the date was October 9th. German theologian Gustav Deissmann was rummaging through maps and books housed in the Topkapi Palace library, located in Istanbul, Turkey. While doing so, he discovered one of the most curious antique maps ever made. It was produced by a Turkish admiral and cartographer, named Hagji Ahmed Muhiddin Piri, otherwise known as Piri Reis. The map showed a portion of west Africa, and would set the world on its ear, with a controversy that continues to this day.

The reason? Well, there is another content featured on the map. It happens to be Antarctica. Now, this is strange for a few reasons. For starters, Antarctica was not discovered yet. That would not happen for another 300 years. However, there is something even more curious than that.

Piri Reis, The Most Curious of Antarctica Antique Maps

piri-reis-antarcttica-antique-mapsThe coastline of Antarctica is mapped in a pre-ice condition. This discovery absolutely shocked people all over the world. Scientists, cartographers, historians; everybody was scrambling to make sense of it. The last time Antarctica was thought to be in a pre-ice condition was 6000 years ago. At that time, it was believed that humanity did not exist. Human civilization would not grace the earth until 4,000 BC, yet and here we have an antique map, drawn by a human, showing a continent, in a pre-ice condition, that would not be discovered until three hundred years later. You can see how this sort of discovery was as awesome as it was perplexing. Furthermore, the coastline was mapped with the kind of detail that can only be achieved with modern satellite technology. So there’s that. They did not know this in 1929. That is why this map is so perplexing.

There is a Rational Reason… in Theory

So, what is really going on? Well the answer to that question really depends on who you asked at the time, and what you still believe today. For the next 30 years or so, there were all sorts of great theories floating about. Some professors put forth the idea that there was a super human race that predated our civilization and had the means of technology to do things that we could only dream of. Why that race no longer exists, they could not say. It seems to be one of those X-Files type theories if you ask me. I guess the truth is out there, we just have to keep looking.

pirir-reis-great-river-artsOther theories included one by Professor Charles Hapgood stating that there was such a rapid shift in the earth, Anarctica just happened to slide over 250 miles or so. If you believe that theory, I have some oceanfront land in Arizona I would really like to sell you as well. That theory was quickly dismissed.

However, it was Hapgood who also put forth the idea that maybe what we are not seeing is the coast of Antarctica at all. Perhaps it is the coast of South America due to the unknown island that is floating inconspicuously off the Antarctic coast. Again, this is theory as well. The coastline of Antarctica matches perfectly to what we have on our satellite maps. However, the South America coastline theory makes more sense, because it is easier to wrap our minds around. It is much easier to believe in Santa.

So, the debate still continues. Whether the map features the coastline of Antarctica, or the coast of South America, is just as subject to debate as is the subject of Santa gaining access to houses with no chimneys. Some people say he makes a chimney appear out of thin air, while others say that he simply uses the front door. The Piri Reis map probably has a much more plausible explanation, we will just have to wait for it to be discovered. While Professor Hapgood’s book, Maps of the Ancient Sea Kings, did put forth several theories, they are still just that… theory. Who knew one map could open such a can of worms?

Don’t be afraid of this fun-loving bunch! Recent marketing and sales trends indicate: it’s now advised we start product development and merchandising to those pesky Millennials! Surprisingly they spend less time on social media and prefer to shop in person!

Enhancing Millennial Customer Interaction

Millennials have become the demographic that is driving marketing strategies for many businesses. Their communication and buying habits are significantly different than other generations before them. Technological advancements are partly to blame, which influences how they interact with businesses. Communicating with millennials lies in the power of interaction, which is perhaps the primary luxury ingredient to win them over.

Get personal on their terms

Messaging – either via a smartphone SMS texting app or other messaging apps such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger is the primary mode of communication for millennials. Millennials perceive conversations through these mediums as more thoughtful and personal than more traditional modes for having conversations. It’s best for marketers to adapt in order to be able to effectively interact with this demographic and yield positive results.

Friends chilling outside taking group selfie and smiling. Laughing young people standing together outdoors and taking selfie.

With messaging, millennials can check their words, edit and communicate in a precise manner. This allows for messages that are more thought-out. Messages, whether by email or a messaging app should be direct, precise and simple, but more importantly, human in its delivery. Avoid making a sales pitch and interact with millennials in a conversational tone, while keeping some degree of formality intact, encouraging engagement and providing value. Millennials are very positive and not very sarcastic.

Offer Flexibility

Having flexibility is important when interacting with millennials, who likes to do things on their own time and like to have options. Your brand needs to sync with their experience. For example, millennials spend a lot of time on smartphones and laptops, sometimes simultaneously, and your business should be available on multiple platforms to engage them. They shouldn’t have to be present in your gift shop to know what you offer. They should easily find this out on their devices while at home, work or commuting.

Get Onboard Social Platforms

The millennial generation is highly connected with their family, friends and colleagues. They have a strong, active presence on social media channels like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

To effectively communicate with millennial consumers, take the interaction to the social platforms that they prefer. Build your brand, enhance engagement and build trust on these platforms and watch your business grow.

Great River Arts understand that millennials are a value-based, tech-savvy, resilient and adaptable generation. We offer the personalized experiences that they are drawn to through maps of their favorite places, the best value for their money, and the appreciation for their loyalty.

Local Branding Opportunities

Millennials love maps!

Branding opportunities are available with Great River Arts for orders over 24 units, and zip code exclusivity is also available.

So you have finished buying gifts for everyone. Several of the people on your list will receive a custom hand-painted historical map from Great River Arts. Your father is getting one of the antique maps featuring his favorite vacation spot. You’re sure it will be a treasure to him for years to come. Some of the reason has to do with the fact that you know how much that place means to him, but mostly, you know it will be a treasure simply because it came from you. Gifts like that always speak to the longing for nostalgia that we have as we grow older.

Antique Maps Speak to Us in So Many Ways

find-yourself-lisa-middletonIn time, that hand-painted historical map will come to mean a lot to him as loved ones move on, and the need for something familiar takes hold. Maps provide that space, and you know that. They provide a connecting point, by tying experiences we shared with loved ones to a particular place and time. The custom map you purchased for your dad will be a treasure, and provide much needed therapy when some days are overcast with gloomy emotions, particularly during the holiday season.

You also purchased one for your best friend because you know she loves to travel.
